How editions are built

Five steps applied to every reference edition, every release. The reference-publishing tradition is older than the API economy and outlasts every vendor that ever sold real-time access to it.

Step 01

Source selection

Every edition is sourced from license-clean upstream materials. Source families are selected per edition and recorded in the Provenance and License Notes inside the pack. Sources with share-alike obligations that conflict with commercial redistribution are excluded. Sources whose terms forbid resale are excluded.

When building the Commercial Electrical Reference edition, source selection began with publicly available federal facility specifications, supplemented by government procurement specifications, utility service manuals, and industry testing and safety standards. Each source was reviewed for redistribution permissibility before any data was extracted.

Step 02

Rights review

Every selected source is reviewed against its license terms before any data enters the pipeline. Attribution requirements are recorded. NOTICE-file obligations are preserved. Where a source's terms permit resale only with attribution, the attribution travels with the data into every output file in the edition.

For the Commercial Electrical Reference edition, federal and state sources are public-domain works of US government bodies. Industry testing and safety standards are cited under fair-use and reference-publishing conventions; the edition does not redistribute the underlying standard text, only cites and indexes it.

Step 03

Schema design

Buyer-facing fields are designed for the actual workflow the edition serves, not for the upstream source's internal data model. Computed columns are clearly marked. Nullable columns are clearly marked. Columns whose values come from a controlled vocabulary use enum values that buyers can query against directly.

In the Commercial Electrical Reference edition, equipment-family records carry a stable equipment-family identifier, the responsible industry equipment standard, the relevant federal facility specification section, applicable code citations, manufacturer-attestation status, and a last-attested timestamp. The schema is designed for submittal-cycle workflow first; the underlying source documents drove the column list rather than the other way around.

Step 04

QA and provenance

Every edition ships with a designed QA Report describing coverage, gaps, and source-mix posture. Every record carries upstream attribution and a retrieval timestamp. The provenance manifest accompanying each ZIP records the upstream release identifiers, the retrieval window, and any transformations applied between source and output.

For the Commercial Electrical Reference edition, the QA Report enumerates which equipment families have full source-backed coverage and which are taxonomy-only placeholders pending a deeper source review. Buyers can read the gaps before relying on the data and plan accordingly.

Step 05

Package integrity

Every edition ships as a single deterministic ZIP archive with a SHA-256 manifest. Buyers can verify integrity after download. Editions are dated and stable; new releases are issued as new editions, not as silent overwrites of an existing edition. If a buyer needs a more recent build, they buy the more recent edition.

The pack-level provenance manifest lists every output file, its SHA-256, the source release identifiers that contributed to it, and the build version. This is the contract between the publisher and the buyer.
